An Indictment Against the Profane

An Indictment Against the Profane by L. D. Durrence

While the Bible instructs that we are to censor our own mouths and that men will be judged upon every idle word we speak, those who would attack others regarding "profane language" would do well to ensure that they themselves aren't hypocrites, guilty of language far more profane than the slang they criticize. Far too often, we find that those who are quick to reprimand others for what they erroneously refer to as profanity, are the same ones truly guilty of what they accuse others. This is precisely the type of negative, hypocritical judgment that the Bible warns against (Matt 7:1-5, Luke 6:41;12:1; Rom 2:1-3).

When we look to what the New Covenant of our Bible teaches regarding profane language, we see that true profane language is language that disagrees with the just judgments and principles laid out in Yahweh's Word. To disagree with Yahweh's Word on any point is to blaspheme, and to blaspheme is to profane our God Himself. This also implies that His Word is knowable, definable, apprehendable, as well as required.

Consider the Ambassador Paul's first letter to Timothy in chapter one, warning him not to tolerate other teachings. In verse 6, Paul refers to those "from which some having failed have turned to talking vainly, wishing to be teachers of the law, understanding neither the things they speak nor concerning things which they strongly maintain." Paul then goes on to explain in verse 8 that the law is good if used lawfully. Then in verses 9-11, "Knowing this, that the law is not laid down for righteous, but for lawless and unruly, impious and wrongful, unholy and profane, patricidal and matricidal, murderous, fornicating, homosexual, kidnapping, lying, falsely swearing men, along with anything else which is contrary to sound instruction according to the good message of the honor of the blessed Yahweh, which I have been entrusted with."

So here we find "profane ones" describing those who oppose the truth of Yahweh's Word by teaching contrary to the good message once and for all time delivered. Going down to chapter 4, verse 7: "But dismiss those profane and old wives' tales and exercise yourself for piety." The Cambridge dictionary defines old wives' tales as "a piece of advice or theory often related to matters of health that was believed in the past but is now known to be wrong." In other words, baseless urban legends which, according to Gerhard Kittell's Theological Dictionary include "Greek myths and Jewish myths." Here profane is used as meaning, relating, or devoted to that which is not sacred or biblical; secular rather than religious; as a person or their behavior not respectful of the actual teachings or doctrines of biblical Christianity.

When we go on to consider 1 Timothy 6:20, we find profanity describing worthless talk and connected with those missing the mark concerning the true faith and opposing the sound teaching of the good message: "O Timotheos, keep that which is entrusted, avoiding profane, empty speech and opposition of falsely labeled 'knowledge,' which some proclaiming have failed concerning the faith."

With a little more research of these passages, anyone will soon discover that Paul is talking about the false teachings of the gnostics and the Jewish fables that comprised the competitive teachings of Paul's day. Paul would advise Titus in Titus 1:13-14, "This testimony is true, for which cause you must censure them relentlessly, that they would be sound in the faith, not giving heed to myths of Judaism and injunctions of men turning themselves away from the truth."

1 Timothy 6: 3-5: "If anyone teaches differently and does not capitulate to sound words: those of our Prince Yahshua Christ, and the doctrine in accordance with piety he is conceited, standing upon nothing, but is mad for inquiries and arguments over semantics from which come envy, strife, blasphemies, wicked suspicions, constant contentions corrupting the minds of men and defrauding them of the truth, supposing piety to be a means of gain."

Speaking of those who contrive useless disputations of words, I am reminded of certain Judeo-Christians and the Judaized theological euphemisms such as "grace," and "faith." The Judaized often take exception to the translation of "favor," instead of "grace" despite that the original meanings are the same. Those who desire to live like jews want "grace" to infer that one can still believe his standing with Yahweh is engraved in stone while such a person fails to walk and abide in the Christian teaching. The same issue exists with the word "faith" that the Anointed Standard Version of the New Testament translates "persuasion." Persuasion implies a defined, knowable system of beliefs whereas the modern understanding of the word "faith" implies a blind, anti-Scriptural faith (Luke 6:39) instead of faith that follows from evidence.

The question begs to be asked: Which do you think the Holy Spirit of Truth is truly warning us to avoid? Some foul-mouth who uses the slang of niggers, wiggers and drunks, or the false prophet who exhibits a phony piety and smooth speech, yet tickles our ears with lies, teaching contrary doctrines and twisting the Scriptures to his own destruction and the destruction of all who follow him (Matt 7:13-14; 15:12-14; 23:5; Luke 6:39; 2 Thes 1:8; 2:10; 2 Pet 2:18-22; Rev 21:8; 22:15) ?

Did any of the Ambassadors (Apostles) use strong language that could have been construed as offensive or vulgar in their day? I know that Paul did. In Philippians 3:8, Paul said, "... I also regard all things to be loss on account of the Anointed. But then indeed I also regard all things to be loss on account of the prevailing of the knowledge of Christ Yahshua my Prince, on account of whom I have suffered loss of all things - and regard them REFUSE (skubala), that I would gain Christ and would be found in Him.."

Strong's Greek dictionary # 4657, gives the following definition: "Skubalon neut. of a presumed derivative of 1519 and 2695 and 906; what is thrown to the dogs, i.e. refuse (ordure):-- dung."

The Urban Dictionary online, says the following under the entry, skubala: "This is a Greek word that is the equivalent to the modern English word 'shit.' Skubala is a rare word, used only in Philippians 3:8 in the New Testament. Dung, rubbish, refuse, and a loss are various inaccurate translations of the Greek word. No translation accurately translates this term to its modern equivalence: 'shit.'"

In other words, Paul said he counts the loss of all things as SHIT that he might gain Yahshua the Christ.

Consider also Galatians 5:12, where Paul told the Israelites in Galatia that he hoped that the deceivers who went behind his back to preach physical circumcision to them would cut their penises off.

For the next use of the word "profane," let us look to Hebrews 12:14-16:

"Pursue peace with all, and sanctification - which without which no one should see the Prince. Watching closely that not any are lacking from the favor of Yahweh, 'lest no root of bitterness springing up' would trouble you and by it many would be defiled, nor some fornicator or profane person such as Esau who for one meal sold his own birthright."

With the aforementioned verse, we find that Esau is given as an example of a profane person. As we know, Esau despised his family, his heritage, and his race when he took wives among the mongrel Canaanites. Therefore we can safely count race-mixers among the profane.

This brings me to another point that begs clarification: In the KJV and most modern English Bibles, Exodus 20:7 reads: “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain." Those who think that saying "God damn" is "taking the Lord's name in vain" would do well to understand that "name" in the archaic language of your KJV implies "authority," e.g., "Stop in the name (authority) of the king." The Anointed Standard Version translates this commandment thusly: "You will not use the authority of the Master your God vainly." How does one use the authority of God vainly? You've probably already guessed it: by imposing one's own subjective philosophy upon the inerrant Word of Yahweh, teaching another good message (gospel) besides the one proclaimed by Yahshua, His Ambassadors and the first century Christians. This applies to those who usurp Christ's authority by teaching a lesser standard of what constitutes a Christian than what the Christian Scriptures actually teach. These are the false prophets and plundering wolves that crept in stealthfully (Jude 3-4), having a form of Christianity, yet denying the power of true Christianity (2 Tim 3:5). They come to you in sheep's clothing (Matt 7:15), vain babblers (1 Tim 6:20) who despoil through vain deceit (Col 2:8), leading silly women captive (1 Tim 3:5-8). These are truly profane men who scatter Yahweh's white Israelite children by diverting their trust from His inerrant Word through vain philosophies contrived in their own imaginations. Today, we call these philosophies relativism, situational ethics, secular humanism, deism, romantic philosophy – all cloaking themselves in the white robes of Christianity.

It is unfortunate that, when one looks for true examples of profane language, one has only to look as far as the nearest Judeo-Christian preacher. Nonetheless, here I provide a few examples from two highly regarded clergymen. The first is Charles H. Spurgeon, the most popular English preacher in the 19th century. This quote is taken from (Metropolitan Tabernacle Pulpit, Vol 61, p 514-515, Sept 28, 1870).

"What is the reason why there are so many sects in the world? Surely it must be because we don't follow the guidance of the Spirit of God. If we followed the Word of God and the will of God in all things, we should be very much more alike than we are. I do not think that even then we should all run in the same groove, for the road to Heaven may be sufficiently wide enough to have several different paths in it, and yet shall they all be in the same way and in the same road."

Contrast this with what Christ said in Matthew 7:13-14: "Enter in through the narrow gate, because wide is the gate and broad is the road which leads to destruction, and they are many who are entering in through it! But because narrow is the gate and distressed the road which leads to life, then they are few who are finding it."

Notice that whereas Spurgeon clearly identified the source of the problem with denominationalism, namely that those who claim to be Christian do not possess the Holy Spirit (mentality) of Truth, do not follow the Word of God nor the will of God, he nonetheless disagrees with God and maintains that the road to salvation is several different paths. Christ said there is only one way and that is to worship Him in spirit and in truth (John 4:24) and that anyone attempting any other route is a thief and a robber, who comes but to steal, kill and destroy (John 10:10). God said that sewing discord between racial brothers is one of the things that He truly hates (Prov 6:16,19). It boils down to this: either Spurgeon is a liar or Christ is. One cannot be a Christian and disagree with God. Either you agree with God and all of His Word and adjust yourself to His just judgments, or you are in an insane state of disbelief, which constitutes rejection of God. There is no fence-straddling or lukewarmness in Yahweh's Government; you either gather with Him, or you scatter (Matt 12:30) and are therefore, His enemy, walking in enmity of His divine will. Romans 16, verses 17 and 18, instructs us to mark those who cause division and avoid them.

The Ambassador Paul rebuked the Corinthians for creating division, some claiming to be of Paul, others of Apollos, others of Cephas. Here was the corrupted seed of denominationalism trying to take root. In 1 Corinthians 1:10 Paul told them:

"Now I encourage you, brethren, by the name of our Prince Yahshua Christ, that you all speak the same thing, and there may not be divisions among you; but that you are disciplined in the same mind and in the same purpose. "

In Ephesians 4:4-6 we find the same principle, illustrating that there is only one true Christianity or belief system: "one body and one spirit just as you have also been called in one hope of your calling. One Prince, one faith, one immersion, one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. " Christian Israelites are called into one body (Col 3:15), all partaking of the same bread (1 Cor 10:17), and we are all one in Christ Yahshua (Gal 3:28).

The next example of profane language that I will address here comes from the American Protestant's most beloved "minister," Billy Graham. When one peruses through Mr. Graham's writings, one starts to feel like a mosquito in a nudist colony in that he does not know where to begin, as the examples of blasphemy are too numerous for the scope of this small article. A 'question and answer' commentary should suffice for my purpose here, wherein Mr. Graham answered a question about interracial marriage, and said that it is perfectly okay with God for a white person to marry a nigger, so long as said nigger professes to be a Christian. Obviously, Mr. Graham has never truly considered the 7th Commandment, which tells us not to adulterate, accurately translated in the Anointed Standard Version as "You will not mongrelize," nor has Graham considered to whom the Bible was exclusively addressed, as illustrated in the opening statement in Matthew (1:1) from our New Testament: "A book of descent (the race) of Yahshua Christ, son of David, son of Abraham."

Mr. Graham should have studied his Greek a little harder at Wheaton college, but instead, he became a political operative of President Johnson's great mongrelized society. Graham set the standard for finding the church of your choice, and in truth became a false substitute for the church in real Christianity. Truly, Mr. Graham is a profane guttermouth and has long seared his conscience against blaspheming the Spirit of Truth.

Consider the statement Mr. Graham made regarding the victims of the Oklahoma bombing at the memorial service in 1995:

"I spoke to the assembled crowd - one of the most difficult things I have done in my life - telling them frankly that I did not understand why God allowed things like this to happen. Our knowledge is limited, I pointed out, and there are some things we will never know this side of eternity. I reminded them, however, that even though we do not understand, God does not change. He is still the God of love and mercy; and in the midst of our sorrows and pain, we can turn to Him in faith and in trust."

Notice how Mr. Graham mixes some truth with his lies. Well did Paul of Tarsus inform us that Satan transforms himself into a messenger of light, light being synonymous with truth. While Graham is correct in stating that God does not change, and that Yahweh is a God of love and mercy and that He is worthy of our trust, Graham neglects to mention Yahweh's foremost attribute: that He is the God of justice (often translated 'righteousness,') and Billy lies outright when he says our knowledge is limited and that we will never know why God allows disasters to happen. The Bible informs us that we have been fully furnished unto all good works and that He has told us all things ( Mark 13:23; 2 Tim 3:17). In the last 14 verses of Romans chapter 1 , we are all specifically told why such disasters occur:

"For the wrath of Yahweh is revealed from heaven upon all profane and unjust men, who withhold the truth with injustice. Because that which is to be known of Yahweh is visible among them, since Yahweh has made it known to them. Namely, the unseen things of His from the creation of the order are clearly observed, being understood in the things made both His eternal power and divinity; for this they are inexcusable. Because knowing Yahweh, they thought of Him as not as God, nor were they thankful; but they became foolish in their reasonings, and were darkened, their hearts void of understanding: alleging to be wise they became fools, and they changed the estimation of the incorruptible Yahweh into a resemblance of an image of corruptible man, and birds, and four-legged animals, and reptiles. On which account Yahweh hands them over to uncleanness in the passions of their hearts, their bodies to be dishonored among themselves: everyone who exchanges the truth of Yahweh with falsehoods, and reverence and serves the creation rather than the Creator, who is praised for the ages. Truly. Therefore Yahweh handed them over to a state of disgrace, for both their females exchanged their natural intimacy for that contrary to nature, and likewise the males have given up the natural intimacy of the female, inflamed in their desires for one another, males with males perpetrating shamefulness, and their wandering necessitates the reward they are receiving among themselves. And just as they do not think it fit to have Yahweh in their knowledge, Yahweh handed them over to a reprobate mind, to do things not fitting; being filled with all injustice, fornication, greediness, wickedness; full of envy, murder, strife, treachery, malignity, slanderers, loud talkers, haters of Yahweh, insolent, arrogant, pretentious, contrivers of evil, disobedient to parents, void of understanding, covenant-breakers, heartless, merciless; such as these who knowing the judgments of Yahweh, that they practicing such things are worthy of death, not only they who cause them, but also they approving of those committing them."

If Billy Graham had been a God-pleaser instead of a man-pleaser, worshiping the Creator instead of the creation, he would have quoted Christ's words in Luke 13:2-3: "Do you suppose that those Galileans had been wrongdoers beyond all the Galileans, because they suffered these things? No, I say to you; but if you do not repent, all of you likewise shall be destroyed. Or those eighteen upon whom the tower of Siloam had fallen and killed them, do you suppose that they were debtors beyond all the men who are dwelling in Jerusalem? No, I say to you, but if you do not repent, all of you in like manner shall be destroyed!"

In closing, I will say that any Bible teacher can be discerned to be pious or profane, based upon the simple fruit of his own lips, as to whether he utters blasphemous statements or abides within the perimeters of the inerrant Word: "Each who going forth and not abiding in the teaching of Christ has not Yahweh. He abiding in the teaching, he also has the Father and the Son. If one comes to you and does not bear this teaching, do not receive him into the house, and do not speak to welcome him! For he speaking to welcome him takes a share in his evil works" (2 John 9-11).

Thus, the Bible teaches that profanity is not the colorful word you shout when you stump your toe or smash your finger with a hammer, but is rather the act of profaning the word of Yahweh by blaspheming the doctrines and the teachings of Christ; that is to say, purposely disagreeing with or teaching contrary to what Christ has actually said. Rather than worrying about the people using biblical words colorfully: hell, bastard, shit, damn, etc., and practicing that romantic philosophy of hiding from reality and wrapping ourselves in absurd conceit, let all who will truly know Yahweh keep His commandments and be of one mind and one accord, all teaching and preaching the same things. There is no place in Yahweh's Kingdom/Government for false piety nor is there any excuse for the rampant profanity that profanes the authority of Yahshua Christ in the day in which we live. Let all who will live godly turn from the foul-mouthed, profane television preachers and the Judeo-Christian dirty-mouths and let our God be true and every man a liar.
